Surat Metro Smart Card System Commissioned Ahead of Launch
SMRL completes commissioning of its Automatic Fare Collection system with NFC Smart Cards, UPI-enabled Token Vending Machines, and app-based ticketing across all 32 stations.
Surat Metro Rail Limited has completed commissioning of its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system across all 32 Phase 1 stations. Supplied by Thales Group, the system includes entry and exit fare gates, Token Vending Machines (TVMs), Smart Card issuance kiosks, and a central clearing house.
The Surat Metro Smart Card is a contactless NFC-based card supporting UPI auto-recharge through PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. Cards will be available at station Customer Care counters through a pre-launch issuance drive planned closer to the commercial launch date.
Key features include a 10% discount on all fares versus token price, auto-recharge below a ₹50 balance threshold, a loyalty programme earning points redeemable for free rides, and in-app balance and travel history tracking.
The entire AFC system has been tested under simulated peak passenger loads at high-traffic stations like Majura Gate and Surat Railway Station, and is ready to go live alongside the commercial launch.
